The Science and Technology Facilities Council, STFC, established in 1995, is a
world renowned centre for Science and Technology, managing international
research projects and providing expert strategic advice to government. The
new Regional Resource Centre which is one of the first of its kind, is to
be based at our Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and is co-financed by SEEDA
and the ESF, it will provide a focal point for technological excellence
specialising in the areas of Advanced Instrumentation, ICT and Electronics.
The STFC are working in partnership with Pera and The Precise Group Ltd on this exciting project which aims to address advanced technological training requirements in the South East. The project offers individuals from industry, education and training organisations the unique chance to get involved with strategic issues and most importantly to help shape the future of the Regional Resource Centre itself by contributing valuable input to influence the project’s direction and content. Through the use of mapping exercises and industry expert involvement, the training programmes will be developed to cover the topics and skills that are most required. A skills gap analysis will also help to determine what training is required across the region. This process will result in the development of nationally recognised NVQ training modules.
The project also aims to focus on raising awareness of science and technology in the region in general and will, through seminars, open events, public lectures and tours, work not only with local businesses but also with schools, FE colleges, universities, research institutions and the general public. The project will provide a clear and structured career pathway for technology based careers to boost the skills base in the South East and strengthen our position in the advanced technology market.
